Glaze
Glaze is basically a form of glass which
is formed by melting silica or sand. To melt silica alone
needs extremely high temperatures but by adding fluxes such
as lead oxide, borax etc. it can be melted at a lower temperature,
the more flux that is added to the silica the lower the
melting point of the glaze.

My pots are once fired, the glaze is applied to the unfired
pot. Most potters fire twice, The first firing is called
biscuit where the pots are fired unglazed. When the biscuit
pots are decorated and glazed they are fired again and this
is called the glost firing.

The range of different glazes and the variations of texture
and colour across the whole temperature range at which pottery
can be fired is truly vast. For many potters delving into
and experimenting with glazes can become their main reason
for making pots.
