Peter at work

Peter Riffin

Sadly, Peter Riffin passed away on the 25th January 2003 at the age of 67 and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A fine potter a talented playwright and a kind and gentle man with a great sense of humour.

Peter and Alan served their five year engineering apprenticeship together after which they each did their two years national service.

It was in 1960 that they started to teach themselves how to make pots and in 1965 they set up their first pottery and called it Nonsuch Pottery. So called because they had hoped to rent an old blacksmiths workshop on the edge of Nonsuch Park at Cheam Village in Surrey where the palace of Henry The Eighth of England had once stood.

Each year for the last 35 years Peter held his Christmas exhibition at the Fairfield Hall in Croydon. His wife Julia has manned a retrospective of his work there over Christmas 2003.

In DVD Volume 1 - an interview with Alan Frewin - you will see how Peter and Alan worked together and taught themselves how to make pots.
